HMV Mill 2023

HMV Mill 20-08-2023

On Sunday, August 20, 2023, Nick drove his second race of the season at the HMV with this beautiful Rudge Special racer from 1934.

The track in Mill was different this year than other years because since 1973 there has not been driven on this street circuit. Because it was 50 years since the last race on this circuit, the organization had decided to reopen the old street circuit for the HMV this year so that the members of the HMV could drive on this beautiful circuit with a length of 4.3 km.

Nick had driven to Mill early Sunday morning so he could be in time for the registration and inspection of the motorcycles for the event.

During the training the motorcycle ran well and Nick was able to explore the track together with his class because it was a new track for everyone, so we drove a bit slower. Each class only had about 15 minutes to explore the course. The track was in good shape and there was no debris on the track. Divided over the track there were 5 or 6 speed hills that have to be taken quietly with Nick's Rudge because the Rudge only has a little suspension in the front fork and a stiff rear frame. Returning to the riders' quarters, Nick had to top up Methanol in his Rudge but soon found out that he had less Methanol with him and hoped he would have just enough to finish both races.

The first race went well, he started at the back of the starting grid and within 2 laps he managed to get ahead and by the 5th lap Nick was already meeting the back rider again. The Rudge ran great and Nick quickly noticed that the bike came into its own here with long straights in the street circuit.

The second race went fantastic, just like in the first race Nick started at the back and soon managed to get back to the front, leaving the rest of the field behind him. After the finish flag came out Nick had to do a cool down lap with the Rudge. Along the way, all spectators and Marshalls were clapping for this great day and for the great races that day and Nick and everyone from this class could also wave to the audience. Eventually Nick still had 1 Liter of Methanol in his bike when he came back to the riders quarters.

In the end Nick became 1st in his class and what a beautiful cup the organization had arranged for this circuit.

HMV Mill 2023

At the HMV there is no racing but demo driving. As a result, the result is selected on who has driven the laps most consistently and it is not about who crosses the finish line first.

Below are a few more photos from the race.
